The NYC SST card: the 40 hours, the two routes, and who is registered to teach them
New York City requires construction and demolition workers to carry a Site Safety Training card showing at least 40 hours of training, or 62 for supervisors. The card lasts five years, and the courses must come from a provider registered with the Department of Buildings, a separate list from the one OSHA publishes.
An OSHA-authorized provider is not automatically a DOB-registered one
SST courses must come from a DOB-Registered Course Provider, which is a separate registry from OSHA's list of authorized providers.

Both routes end at the same 40-hour card. They do not cost the same, and the difference is the mistake that costs people a course: an OSHA 10 already in your pocket puts you on the longer one.

The 40 and 62-hour totals are the Department's own, quoted below. The course-by-course breakdown of each route follows the program's published curriculum; confirm the exact course list on the DOB page before you buy, because the required courses changed on August 1, 2026.
Workers must be able to submit a Site Safety Training (SST) card demonstrating proof that they have received a minimum of 40 hours of safety training defined by the Department.

What changed on August 1, 2026
As of August 1, 2026 the 2-Hour Drug and Alcohol Awareness course can no longer be delivered. The 2-Hour Mental Health Awareness course replaces it, and now counts toward SST renewal.
NYC Department of Buildings, read August 1, 2026: “2 -Hour Drug and Alcohol Awareness may not be delivered beginning August 1,2026. 2-Hour Mental Health Awareness replaces it.”
If you already hold an OSHA 10 or 30
If you took an OSHA 10 or 30-hour course in the past five years you can get a temporary SST card that is good for six months, and you have to finish the remaining training inside that window.
NYC Department of Buildings, read August 1, 2026: “Workers who have taken 10-Hour or 30-Hour OSHA in the past 5 years are eligible for a Site Safety Training (SST) Temporary Card, valid for 6 months, during which time the worker must complete the rest of their outstanding training for a Site Safety Training (SST) Worker Card.”
Who issues the card
Not us, and not OSHA. The course provider reports your completion and the card comes through the Department of Buildings process. MyOshaCard is an independent guide: we do not sell these courses and we do not issue cards.
Common questions about the SST card
Does my OSHA 30 from another state count?
It counts toward the hours, not as the card. SST courses must come from a DOB-Registered Course Provider, which is a separate registry from OSHA's list of authorized providers. And it puts you on the shorter of the two routes: from OSHA 30 you add 2 courses and 10 hours to reach 40.
Can I do the whole thing online?
The Department registers providers, and several of them deliver the courses online. What matters is not the format but the registry: the provider has to be DOB-registered, and being OSHA-authorized is not the same thing. Check the provider against the Department's own list before you pay.
How long does the card last?
5 years from issuance, with a 1-year grace period to renew. During the grace period the expired card does not get you on site.
I already have an OSHA card. Do I get anything right away?

Can I take it in Spanish?
Some DOB-registered providers deliver the courses in Spanish, and we mark it in the table when we have verified it on the provider's own page. Where the cell is empty, we have not checked yet, so ask the provider before you pay.
